Twenty six year old Lisa Alpern is a vivacious, curvaceous woman who has struggled most of her life to find fashionable and flattering clothing in her size. Finding trends was difficult when she was a fuller figured straight size woman, but when Lisa transitioned to wearing plus sizes, she discovered there was very little information readily available about clothing options for her new, larger size. Lisa learned that there were very few well-known plus size retail chains, and when she moved to New York City after graduating college, she discovered most of these retailers were not well-represented. Having earned a BFA in Fashion Design and being passionate about style and knowledgeable about the industry, Lisa wanted to dress similar to other Manhattan fashionistas.
Disappointed and tired of having to leave the city to go to suburban malls in order to shop for clothing, Lisa began doing research on the Internet for better alternatives. She discovered that there are an extensive number of clothing sites for plus size women on the web that very few people know about. Many of these sites contain items Lisa never expected to be available for full-figure women; from vintage style t-shirts, to brightly colored tights, elaborate Halloween costumes, poodle skirts, delicate lingerie and many other stylish and useful items.
Lisa created Beauty Plus Power to make this information readily available to full figured women around the world. She is dedicated to showing women the variety of trendy and stylish clothing options available to show off their curves and fit their diverse personalities and lifestyles. In addition, Lisa wants to change mainstream perceptions of larger women.
"I want there to be more women like us on TV, in magazines, in movies - playing the lead and not the role of best friend. I also want to show retailers that we have disposable income and too few places to spend it. We need to support those retailers who already make plus clothing, and encourage those that don't that there are economic benefits to dressing us," says Lisa.
Lisa's career focus has been in the beauty and fashion industry. Since late 2002, Lisa has worked as a freelance make-up artist and hairstylist. Lisa works with models, actors and musicians on various projects including album covers and fashion advertisements. Her clients have included Playtex, Capezio, Leadstar, The Learning Channel and more. In addition, Lisa has written a chapter on makeup for a plus size bridal guide scheduled to be published towards the end of 2004. Lisa has a second website, www.lisafashionista.com , which focuses on her career as a makeup artist and hairstylist.
Lisa holds a BFA in Fashion Design from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and a New York State Cosmetology License, as well as advanced makeup training from top New York schools.
